From Mill Village to New Construction
Spray Foam Insulation in Woodfin deals with some of the oldest working-class housing in the Asheville area. The town's history is tied to manufacturing, and much of its remaining early housing stock is typical of early 20th century mill villages, in neighborhoods with names like Martel Village and Company Bottom. Those houses were built small and quickly, with crawl spaces, thin walls and no insulation to speak of.
What a mill house needs
Most mill houses respond well to a simple sequence: seal and insulate the crawl space or the floor over it, seal the attic floor and blow in loose fill, then insulate walls with dense-pack cellulose if the budget allows. Because the houses are small, the work goes quickly and the improvement is easy to feel.
Growth since the 1990s
Woodfin was incorporated in 1971. After manufacturing declined in the 1970s and 1980s, the town started seeing new residential growth in the 1990s as people moved to western North Carolina. Newer homes and apartments here often need different work: bonus room and kneewall sealing, garage ceilings and attic bypasses around recessed lights.
Along the river
The French Broad River flows through the western part of town. Homes on the lower ground near the river face more humidity and flood risk, which makes crawl space moisture the first thing we check.
Riverside neighborhoods and new apartments
Newer construction along the French Broad and on the hills above it includes townhomes and apartments as well as single-family houses. For townhome owners, the shared walls and attic spaces affect what can be done; we look at what belongs to your unit and focus on the attic floor, the rim joist and any floor over an unheated space. Woodfin covers about 9.2 square miles, so we see a wide range of house types on a single day.

Woodfin Questions
Is it worth insulating a small mill house?
Yes. Small houses with no insulation show a big difference in comfort from crawl space and attic work, and the jobs are smaller and cost less.
Can old walls be insulated without removing siding?
Often the siding pieces come off and go back on, or we drill from inside. Dense-pack cellulose fills the cavities.
Do you check for knob-and-tube wiring?
Yes. We flag it so an electrician can evaluate it before insulation goes around it.
Can you insulate a townhome?
Usually yes, within your unit: attic floor, crawl space or garage ceiling, and rim areas. We check what your association allows.
